The recent Apple event brought many different emotions. On the one hand, the new iPad Mini has impressed even the most demanding Android fans. On the other hand, the new regular iPad is battered with still big bezels and older generation chips, the Apple Watch 7 has no major improvements and no M2/M1X laptop.

But the really boring thing is the iPhone 13 series. Aside from the hilarious Knives Out-style intro, the launch doesn't have any other standout moments. Instead, it simply showcases what other phones do: The screen is brighter than ever! Longer battery life than ever! Faster than competing brands!

The only "major" improvement is that the iPhone 13 Pro will have a 120Hz LTPO display with a variable refresh rate. OnePlus 9 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra had that, but to be honest, Apple has always lagged behind in new technology compared to other brands. "Only" going after a year is already an improvement.

Aside from the smaller notch and the new A15 Bionic chip, the iPhone 13 isn't a huge upgrade over the iPhone 12.

The question is, will such an unattractive iPhone reduce sales? CNBC reports that 250 million iPhone users are currently using older phones that are three years old or more. A large number of loyal users can upgrade just because their device is too old, and compared to the iPhone X or XR, the iPhone 13 is a significant improvement.

Can Android take away those few million loyal users? The Pixel 6 Pro in particular, it seems to be the phone most likely to compete with the iPhone 13 Pro.

First, the Pixel 6 (according to reliable rumors) will receive 5 years of software updates. Apple users can upgrade their machines every few years, but older machines are also updated quickly as soon as a new operating system is released. Compared to other Android phones - which receive at most three years of updates - the Pixel 6 has a long and fast update time, which iPhone users take for granted.

Then there's the Pixel 6's design, with its two-tone and eye-catching rear cameras. Apple's hardware design history is filled with outstanding color technology, and we've seen how much that still appeals to Apple fans by their enthusiastic response to colorful iMacs. The iPhone 13 also comes in a variety of color options, but that's just colorful icing on top of a bland vanilla cake.

Eye-catching colors also extend to the Pixel 6's software. Android 12 and the new Material You design language help you inject color into every menu, button, and icon on your phone. In addition, its color extraction tool automatically changes the color of the menu based on your current wallpaper. While Android phones are all about customization, the Pixel 6 has a colorful trick that Apple switchers can enjoy without diving into the settings.

The Pixel 6 gives Apple users a native operating system experience that they will appreciate. Many iPhone owners also rely on Google apps for their daily life and work. Being able to use familiar apps as default apps will therefore make the transition to a new phone much easier. Meanwhile, other flagships from Samsung or OnePlus all have their own app stores along with Google's, which can be too cluttered and complicated for iPhone users.

Finally, the Pixel 6's main camera is rumored to have a resolution of up to 50MP, the Pixel 6 will be the more attractive option if Google markets it right. Not only the sensor, but Google's automated AI enhancements will be very appealing to iPhone owners who want fast, high-quality shots.

We don't have iPhone pre-order numbers yet, but SCMP reports that Apple has sold 2 million iPhone 13 units in China. And iMore says people have had problems pre-ordering the device. Is it because the number of visitors is too high?

According to a report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the number of pre-orders for iPhone 13 is higher than for iPhone 12, in the same period last year. Especially the two high-end versions iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, both have higher orders than iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.

Meanwhile, Pixel sales have been on a downward trend for the past few years. We know that Google sold 7.2 million Pixel units in 2019, but Pixel 4 sales were lower than Pixel 3 in the first two quarters. Then, Nikkei Asia reported last year that Google only plans to sell 800,000 Pixel 5 units and about 2 million Pixel 4a and 4a 5G.

Google's mid-range flagships can't attract customers, although they always perform well thanks to Google's optimizations, but Android users will either switch to high-end Samsung flagships or choose the Pixel series instead. "a" is cheaper.

The Pixel 6 is a truly premium flagship with a beautiful display, compelling software, powerful cameras, and in-house Google Tensor chipsets. If all goes well, it should appeal to Android and Apple users equally, with specs Android users will appreciate and things Apple users want in a phone experience.

But that will only happen if Google is fully committed to its marketing campaign. Tech buffs have been following Pixel 6 rumors and leaks for months, but it's not clear how much the average user will care about the Pixel - except as a budget brand. Maybe it's time for Google to adopt Apple's "think differently" slogan in its own way and go all out to make the Pixel 6 an interesting alternative to Apple's boring iPhone.

Will that happen? Google has a tendency to let products speak for themselves, then die when they don't sell well without giving proper marketing. They don't need to surpass the iPhone 13 in sales, which is impossible. Pixel 6 only needs to get a part of the customers of the iPhone 13, with sales that are much better than the previous generation, then it is already a victory. Hopefully Google can realize that if the Pixel 6 fails to make its mark against Apple's most boring phone since the iPhone 8, it will forever mark the Pixel brand as a small player in the smartphone arena.
