iPhone is about to have a feature to help save owners in traffic accidents

This is a new feature that can really save users' lives. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Apple will use the accelerometer sensor in the iPhone and Apple Watch to sense that a car crash has occurred and alert 911 emergency numbers.

According to documents seen by the WSJ, Apple has been working on the feature for several years, so it certainly won't be something the company is just "trying for fun". Obviously, this feature needs to be done correctly because otherwise Apple will be held responsible for a series of false 911 calls.

During testing, Apple detected more than 10 million suspected incidents, with more than 50,000 of them associated with calls to 911. Since car accidents are often accompanied by calls to 911, Apple could uses suspected incidents in conjunction with calls to 911 to make corporate incident detection more accurate.

This certainly isn't the first time smartphones have been used to automatically report accidents as Google has previously introduced the feature on Pixel 3 devices and OnStar also had it for a while. However, it will be more widely available if it appears on the iPhone and Apple Watch thanks to a large number of users.

Apple has also tested a similar idea with fall detection on the Apple Watch, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the iPhone and Apple Watch could detect car crashes. Of course, it's all based on leaked documents, so there's no guarantee it'll ever come to fruition.
